The Athlete First philosophy has remained the same since I started coaching 30+ years ago. Coaching methods constantly change, evolve, and hopefully improve. The athletes, events, and countries sometimes change, but the basic principles behind my training remain the same to this day.
There are two main part to the our coaching philosophy, and they are both in the name – Athlete First.
The first part is more personal, the Athlete comes First. The only reason I am coaching is because I want to help make people better (physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, …). Sport has been an easy and effective way for me to do that, and that is only possible by putting the Athlete First and putting my ego to the side. I don’t care about being famous or if people even know what athletes I have coached or are working with at the moment. I want to do all I can to help my athletes, or any athlete, be as successful as possible on and off the track, field, course, court, arena, or wherever their sport takes place. Luckily, I think I have had many more successes than failures, but this is sport failures are part of our profession and we all need to learn and improve from them as well.
The second part of the philosophy deals more with the technical side of coaching, focus on making the best Athlete First. To me I want to make the best athlete, or sportsman, possible before we start to focus on their event, position, or sport. The destination is always on our mind, but we start the journey trying to make the most complete and effective athlete possible. The focus is always on teaching proper technique first. I think the good sound proper technique is the best thing I can give an athlete no matter what the event or sport. This can then be built upon into more complex technique or skills as the athlete need to be successful.
This website is hopefully an extension of these. I want to share with coaches, athletes, parents, physiotherapists, sports scientists … whoever an athlete comes in contact with, some of the resources I have found helpful and effective in my coaching journey.
